A select committee is a parliamentary committee set up to examine the work of government departments, public bodies, or particular areas of policy. Select committees can hold inquiries, call for written evidence, question ministers and experts, and publish reports with recommendations. They are an important part of parliamentary scrutiny, although they do not usually make law themselves.
