A Secretary of State is a senior government minister, usually responsible for leading a government department. Secretaries of State sit in Cabinet or attend Cabinet, answer to Parliament for their department’s work, make policy decisions and introduce or defend legislation. The title is used across many departments, such as Health and Social Care, Education, Defence, Justice and the Home Office.
