A confidence motion is a motion used to test whether the government has the support of the House of Commons. If the House withdraws confidence from the government, the political consequences can be serious and may include resignation, attempts to form a new government, or a general election depending on the constitutional and political circumstances. The term is also often used broadly for motions explicitly expressing confidence or no confidence.
