It includes historic market towns, villages and countryside characterised by limestone hills, wooded valleys and agricultural land. Much of the constituency lies within or close to the Cotswolds landscape, giving it a strongly rural setting. Larger local centres provide services for widely dispersed communities, while road links connect the area with Swindon, Bath, Bristol and Gloucester. Settlement is generally low-density outside the principal towns. Overall, the seat combines market communities and villages with an extensive countryside hinterland rather than a continuous urban corridor.
