Northampton South covers the southern half of Northampton and includes the town centre together with extensive residential and suburban communities. The constituency is strongly urban, with commercial, civic and transport facilities concentrated around central Northampton and housing spreading outward toward the southern boundary. The River Nene and major road and rail routes are important physical features, while parks and open spaces provide breaks within the built-up area. Development becomes lower-density toward the outer edge where Northampton meets surrounding countryside. Overall, the seat is focused on the southern and central parts of one large Midlands town rather than a rural hinterland.
