Middlesbrough and Thornaby East crosses the River Tees and links much of Middlesbrough with eastern parts of Thornaby. Middlesbrough is the largest urban and commercial centre, with dense residential neighbourhoods, industrial land and major transport infrastructure. Across the river, Thornaby forms part of the wider Teesside conurbation and has its own residential and local centre areas. The Tees, railways and major roads strongly shape the constituency’s geography, while former industrial and redevelopment sites remain prominent. The seat is overwhelmingly urban and forms part of one continuous Teesside built-up area rather than including a substantial rural hinterland.
