Local context

About this constituency

Gosport constituency lies on the western side of Portsmouth Harbour and is centred on Gosport and Lee-on-the-Solent. The peninsula setting gives the seat a strong maritime character, with Portsmouth Harbour to the east and the Solent along its southern edge. Gosport is the largest urban centre, with extensive residential neighbourhoods and long-standing naval connections, while Lee-on-the-Solent provides a separate coastal community to the west. The constituency is predominantly built up, although parks, airfield land and coastal open spaces create significant breaks in development. Ferry connections link Gosport directly with Portsmouth, while road access runs north through Fareham.

Description last reviewed 9 September 2026.

Household composition

A broad view of household types in this constituency. Project Open Gov uses the four broad groups supplied by the Commons Library so the presentation remains consistent across the UK.

41,984 householdsCensus 2021
One-person households31.3% · 13,135 households
Families with dependent children25.6% · 10,766 households
Other single-family households39.7% · 16,656 households

Household-composition figures come from the Commons Library constituency dataset. The source uses census data and Project Open Gov displays its broad household groups rather than attempting to harmonise the detailed categories itself. View household-composition source ↗

Disability and day-to-day activities

The source records whether day-to-day activities are limited and uses separate person-level tables for England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

96,270 people in the source baseCensus 2021Source comparison: England & Wales
Day-to-day activities limited a lot7.9% · 7,613 people
Day-to-day activities limited a little12.2% · 11,751 people
Not disabled under the Equality Act79.9% · 76,906 people

Comparison note: the workbook uses different source terminology across the UK: England & Wales uses “Disabled under the Equality Act”, while Scotland and Northern Ireland use “Disabled” / “Non-disabled”. Project Open Gov therefore preserves the source categories and does not present them as one single like-for-like UK legal definition.

Disability figures come from the Commons Library constituency workbook. This profile uses the person-level tables only; the workbook also contains separate household-level disability tables which are not used here. View disability source ↗

About this award

The Gosport Waterfront Heritage Project (GWHP) will work with local historians, teachers and young people to uncover historical information about Gosport’s coastline, which has always stood in the shadow of its larger neighbour -Portsmouth harbour. Young people will investigate historical archives/records revealing the history of Gosport’s changing coastline over the centuries. This one-off project aims to educate the local community of Gosport’s changing coastal landscape, from medieval defences/fortifications, to wartime efforts from Napoleonic Wars to WW2 D-Day operations. Through archives/records, historical photographs/artwork, and historical maps, it’ll also reveal Gosport’s lost trades/industries. Young people will work with professional artists, creating paintings of Gosport’s changing historical coastline. They’ll be upskilled learning new historical research and exhibition creation techniques, creating engaging exhibitions of their research and artwork for the wider community. The project will create GWHP teaching/learning resources for local schools, enabling hundreds of future young people to benefit from the projects’ legacy.
