Gorton and Denton crosses the boundary between Manchester and Tameside. It links eastern Manchester neighbourhoods around Gorton with Denton and adjoining communities farther east. The constituency is almost entirely urban and forms part of the continuous Greater Manchester built-up area. Gorton has a dense inner-suburban and former industrial character, while Denton is a distinct town with more suburban neighbourhoods around its centre. Major roads and railway lines run through the seat, reflecting its position on routes between central Manchester and Tameside. Parks, former industrial sites and river corridors create some open space, but the constituency is predominantly made up of closely connected residential communities.
