Local context
Eastbourne constituency is centred on the East Sussex seaside town and contains almost all of its main urban area. The town centre and seafront form the principal commercial and visitor focus, while residential neighbourhoods spread inland and along the coast. Eastbourne sits between the English Channel and the South Downs, giving the constituency a distinctive physical boundary: dense urban development occupies the coastal plain, while open chalk downland rises sharply to the west. The seafront, pier and promenade are among the town’s best-known features, and rail and road routes connect it with Brighton, Hastings and inland Sussex. The seat is therefore strongly focused on one coastal town rather than a large rural hinterland.
