The total number of recorded votes on all sides of a division or election result.
Votes cast means the total number of votes recorded in a result. In a parliamentary division, it usually means the Ayes plus the Noes, or the Contents plus the Not Contents in the Lords. In an election result, it usually refers to votes recorded for candidates or options. The term does not necessarily explain who did not vote or why.
