A government defeat occurs when ministers fail to win a vote on a motion, amendment or piece of legislation where the government has taken a position. Government defeats can be politically significant because they may show opposition from other parties, backbench rebellion or a lack of support in one of the Houses. The consequences depend on the subject, the House involved and the size of the defeat.
