This summer, we will bring a solo show of Anthony Shapland’s work to North Wales for the first time. The exhibition, murmur, comes at a significant moment in Shapland’s creative practice. 2025 saw themes developed across his work over many years culminate with the critically acclaimed solo show ‘Liar, Liar’ and Shapland receiving national recognition for his debut novel ‘A room above a shop’. murmur is not only an opportunity to bring Shapland’s work to a new audience, but to seed the development of a new body of work with one of the country’s most exciting multi-disciplinary artists. We propose optimising this opportunity though investment in a storytelling space, where the public can creatively engage with Shapland’s writing, filmmaking and visual art in new and creative ways, and through commissioning 3 x artist pamphlets, responding to the idea of mimicking which is central to the show.

About this award
Our project will secure the future of St Mary’s Cathedral by addressing urgent repair needs while improving how people access and engage with its heritage. Essential works include repair of the failing nave floor, removal of asbestos, and installation of a new energy-efficient heating system. These are critical to keep the building safe, open, and sustainable. Alongside this, we will deliver a programme of community heritage engagement, focusing on the cathedral’s stained glass, archives, and diverse history. We will work with schools and young people, and deliver an oral history project to capture the experiences of the congregation. This project will increase participation, strengthen community connections, and improve access to the cathedral’s heritage. It forms the first phase of a wider plan to develop the site as a sustainable and inclusive community space for the future.
