Torfaen covers a series of communities in south-east Wales along the eastern valleys north of Newport. It includes Pontypool, Cwmbran and surrounding towns and villages. Cwmbran is the largest modern commercial and residential centre, while Pontypool has a more historic valley-town character. Settlement follows the valley corridors, with steep hills and upland areas separating built-up communities. Major roads connect the constituency with Newport, Cardiff and the wider south Wales region. Overall, the seat combines established former industrial communities with newer town development and a substantial amount of surrounding upland landscape.
