Rhondda and Ogmore covers a broad area of the South Wales Valleys and includes communities spread along the Rhondda and Ogmore valleys. Settlement is strongly linear, following narrow valley floors beneath steep hills and upland ridges. Former mining towns and villages form most of the populated areas, with roads and railways running along the principal valleys toward larger centres farther south. Open moorland separates neighbouring valleys and gives the constituency a pronounced upland character. No single town dominates the entire seat; instead, it consists of numerous closely connected communities shaped by the geography and industrial history of the coalfield.

Welsh composer Nathan James Dearden has been invited for a highly-competitive creative residency at the Arvo Pärt Centre, Estonia, to develop 'passion' — a major new work reimagining the Passion form for the 21st-century. The project explores sacrifice, queer identity, and post-industrial Welsh heritage through Renaissance viol consort and extended reality technologies. This residency enables direct access to Pärt's archives and a contemplative environment unavailable in the UK. Conversations are under way for a premiere at Cardiff's Llais Festival with partners Fretwork and The Carice Singers, positioning Welsh artists within international contemporary sacred music networks.

About this award
In partnership with Coalfields Regeneration Trust and a steering group of people/organisations with lived experience, we’ll create an exhibition to document, interpret and share the heritage of Wales’s coal tips - one of the most significant, endangered forms of industrial heritage in the UK. We’ll collect oral histories, photographs, documents and objects from communities living in the shadow of the tips, and information from organisations about their past, present and future, the dangers and possibilities. The exhibition will accompany our tour to nine Welsh venues, of our play, The Silent Volunteer, about Aberfan, and the dangers of staying silent. We’ll create a public conversation through community engagement and post-show discussions, during the 60th anniversary. The exhibition will then be sited at two venues in RCT (highest concentration of remaining dangerous coal tips) including St Elfan’s, Aberdare, starting point for a new mining trail, which hosted the play’s R&D.
