Cardiff East covers the eastern side of the Welsh capital, extending from established inner-city neighbourhoods eastward through Rumney and Llanrumney to the outer communities around St Mellons and Trowbridge. The constituency is predominantly urban and suburban, but its physical form changes from denser streets closer to central Cardiff to larger residential neighbourhoods and more open land toward the city’s eastern boundary. Major road and rail routes cross the area toward Newport, while the Rhymney River and low-lying land influence parts of the landscape. The seat is therefore firmly part of the Cardiff urban area but includes both long-established neighbourhoods and newer outer-city development.

In March 2026 Operasonic was informed by Arts Council Wales that the organisation would be put into a development year across 26 / 27 as ACW felt the organisation needed to be clearer about its identity and project work. ACW and Operasonic discussed a work plan for the development year and a number of areas for improvement have been noted. The project will allow us to robustly challenge ourselves and put in place the right structure to be a vibrant and viable organisation with a clear identity and purpose. In turn, strengthening our ability to apply for multi-year funding.

About this award
Yr Ardd is a participatory creative movement and community arts project at Global Gardens community garden, Flaxland Allotments, Gabalfa 12/06-21/06/2026. The project will deliver three inclusive, site-responsive creative movement workshops with and one performative community celebration. Each workshop will combine creative movement, sensory exploration, and craft activities. Participants will be invited to deepen their awareness of the Garden’s ecologies and social and geological histories, interpreting these elements through somatic and creative movement explorations. Participants will embark on a sensory exploration of the gardens and guided to respond to these encounters through sharing creative movement, drawing and crafts derived from natural materials (drawing, clay modelling and collage), all inspired by the patterns of their movement explorations in the Gardens. The project will culminate in a community sharing of movement, dance, crafts and stories developed through the workshops, as well the co-creation of a feast with seasonal Gardens produce.
