Caerphilly constituency lies wholly within Caerphilly County Borough and is centred on Caerphilly town and the surrounding South Wales valleys. The seat contains a succession of built-up communities separated by steep ridges, wooded slopes and open upland ground, giving it the linear settlement pattern typical of much of the Valleys. Caerphilly itself is the largest individual centre and lies close to the southern edge of the constituency, with communities farther north following the valley corridors into a more elevated landscape. The constituency is therefore predominantly urban and semi-urban, but its towns and neighbourhoods are broken up by substantial areas of hillside and countryside rather than forming one continuous flat urban area.

About this award
In celebration of Ruperra Castle’s 400th anniversary in 2026, we want to help the community understand why it is so special, working with Welsh speaking professional artists, we will create an animation using local children’s images and voices explaining why it was built. This will be part of resources to be used in schools, reaching thousands of children. We will also involve the public through workshops to create two scenery embroidery castles, to explain how its architectural design was inspired by the backdrops in pageantry, explaining how special it is as the only pageant castle in Wales. This forms part of a larger free exhibition in October 2026 at Bedwas Workmen’s Hall which will attract hundreds of people through talks, activities and performances.
