Blaenau Gwent and Rhymney covers the heads of several South Wales valleys. It includes the main Blaenau Gwent communities around Ebbw Vale, Tredegar, Abertillery and Brynmawr and extends south-east into the upper Rhymney Valley in Caerphilly. The constituency is characterised by a series of linear towns and villages separated by steep hills and upland areas rather than one continuous urban centre. Former industrial valley settlements occupy most of the populated corridors, while large stretches of open moorland rise between them. Ebbw Vale and Tredegar are among the larger local centres, with the Rhymney side connecting the constituency toward the wider Valleys transport network farther south.
