Aberafan Maesteg links the Port Talbot and Afan Valley side of Neath Port Talbot with Maesteg and communities in the Llynfi, Garw and Ogmore valleys of Bridgend. The constituency therefore stretches from the coast around Port Talbot inland through a succession of valley towns and villages. Its western end includes the larger urban and industrial areas around Port Talbot, while the eastern and northern parts are more linear, following the valleys into communities such as Maesteg, Caerau and the upper Ogmore and Garw areas. The result is a constituency with a varied physical character, combining coastal urban neighbourhoods, former industrial valley settlements and substantial upland countryside between them.
