About this award
My plan is to record an album of original music featuring melodies I've written inspired by my hometown of Ardrossan and its shipbuilding past and others reflecting my present home in the Blane Valley. Many of the pieces have already been performed by the musicians I've asked to play on the recording. These include Alice Allen (cello), Ailie Robertson (clarsach), Chris Gibb (border pipes) and my long time collaborators Euan Drysdale (guitar/piano) and Iain Crawford (double bass). The album will be recorded at Kippen Parish Church, in rural Stirlingshire using a newly refurbished Steinway piano restored by local piano technician expert Alasdair Mclean. The album will be engineered and co-produced by Duncan Lyall, one of the folk music genres most respected producers. Tracks will include 'Montgomerie's Dream' (about the proposed 1791 Ardrossan to Glasgow Canal) and 'The Auld Pipe Track' written in recognition of the famous water route opened by Queen Victoria in 1859.
