Motherwell, Wishaw and Carluke covers a broad part of North and South Lanarkshire. Motherwell and Wishaw form the largest continuous urban area and are closely connected to the wider Glasgow conurbation, while Carluke lies farther south-east as a distinct town surrounded by more open countryside. The constituency has a strong former industrial character, with residential neighbourhoods, transport infrastructure and redeveloped industrial land across much of the northern section. Toward Carluke and the Clyde valley, settlement becomes less dense and more rural. Major rail and road links connect the main towns with Glasgow and central Scotland. Overall, the seat combines urban Lanarkshire with semi-rural communities.
