Lothian East covers much of East Lothian to the east of Edinburgh. It includes towns such as Haddington, Dunbar, North Berwick, Tranent and Prestonpans, together with numerous villages and rural communities. The constituency has a strong coastal character along the Firth of Forth and North Sea, while inland areas are dominated by fertile farmland and low hills. Haddington provides an important county-town centre, with other towns forming distinct local hubs. Rail and road routes connect the area closely with Edinburgh, giving many communities a commuter character. The seat therefore combines coastal towns, market centres, villages and extensive agricultural countryside.
