Glasgow South covers a wide area on the southern side of the River Clyde. It includes established residential neighbourhoods, local town centres and substantial parks stretching from inner south Glasgow toward the city’s outer southern boundary. The northern part is more densely built and closely connected to the city centre, while neighbourhoods farther south generally have a more suburban form. Railways and major roads provide important links across the constituency, and green spaces create noticeable breaks in development. The seat remains wholly urban and suburban, but the variety of housing and neighbourhood types gives different areas distinct characters. It forms part of one continuous Glasgow conurbation rather than a separate town.

About this award
The Gutter Galaxy is a mythical space born from expressive gestures and figurative abstractions. The central activity will be drawing, painting, and archiving my work in my Glasgow studio. This activity will then culminate in finished artworks that I can present in studio visits and exhibitions in the future. The thrust of my project is nurtured by the broad range of insights I have gained over the course of my 13-year professional practice. In short, these insights offer multi-layered considerations of the transformative forces of migration, colonialism and cultural assimilation.

I am requesting £4849.2 to support Cruelty on a Budget, a video installation. The installation will consist of four video channels, including one hand drawn animation, and a tape loop. The content of the project addresses neurodivergent experiences, auditory overstimulation, and ageism. Awarded funds will support artist and performer fees, day rates for a sound recordist and lighting technician, and venue hire. The final work will be presented at Stereo, Glasgow during Glasgow Art Weekend, and at Sunview Luncheonette in Brooklyn, New York, USA, reaching at least 400 viewers.

About this award
Human Nature is a framework for (co)producing an ambitious new body of work following my recent research residency at the Centre for the Social Study of Microbes (CSSM) at the University of Helsinki, Finland. On residency, I built a body of research exploring my relationship to my gut microbiome—playing with the meaning of ‘nature’ as both an inherent characteristic or quality, and as a term to refer to the non-human agents of the physical world. Through conducting interviews, archival research, and material experiments, I questioned, if I am more bacteria than human, then how stable are the assumptions upon which I’ve built my understanding of selfhood and humanness? Support from the Open Fund would enable me to transition from a period of research to one of production; realising new works comprising moving image, text, print, and workshops that will be shared with audiences in both Scotland and Finland.

Marvo Men: R & D for a new radio play.

Marvo Men will undertake a period of research and development to produce a new experimental radio play esembled from the overgrown edges of childhood play and growing out of the prompt: where did you go to escape the adult world? Between July 2026-February 2027, Marvo Men will undertake a period of development with invited contributors to explore the in-between spaces and places where childhood lingers and play flourishes just out of sight. The results will be assembled into a series of semi-improvised sonic journeys. Between September & November 2026, Marvo Men will play work-in-progress shows in Glasgow & Edinburgh and in January 2027, we will record the new radio play at La Chunky Studios (Glasgow). The final piece will be premiered as part of Radiophrenia Festival 2027 and published as an album on the Cork based label Krim Kram in 2027.

Creative nonfiction R&D for Lazarus: When Animals Come Back from Extinction

About this award
This project focuses on the research and development of my second creative nonfiction nature writing book, Lazarus: When Animals Come Back from Extinction. A Lazarus taxon is a species presumed extinct and then rediscovered years later, alive. My book will blend narrative memoir, natural and cultural history and travel writing with lyrical, reflective writing for a commercial market. This book follows my journeys to see these animals, including New Zealand’s flightless takahe, Bavarian pine voles, and the Neptune’s Cup giant sea sponge in their last refuges. I will explore the Lazarus animals’ mysterious disappearances and rediscovery stories, showing how we can ensure their precarious futures. The project centres on research field trips and writing time. Outputs include: sample chapters, a commercial publishing contract (probably with Bloomsbury) and the first draft of my manuscript. The project will support my professional development from recent debut to established nature writer.
