Local context

About this constituency

Edinburgh West covers the western side of Edinburgh and includes communities around Corstorphine, Murrayfield, South Gyle and the city’s western suburban edge. The constituency is predominantly suburban, with established residential neighbourhoods, major employment areas and transport infrastructure. Edinburgh Airport and the surrounding business and transport corridor strongly influence the western part, while areas closer to the city centre have a denser residential character. The Water of Leith, parks and golf courses provide important green spaces. Major rail, tram and road links cross the seat toward central Edinburgh and destinations farther west. Overall, the constituency combines mature suburbs with some of the capital’s most significant transport and commercial development.

Housing-tenure figures come from the most recent census: 2021 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and 2022 in Scotland. View housing-tenure source ↗

Household composition

A broad view of household types in this constituency. Project Open Gov uses the four broad groups supplied by the Commons Library so the presentation remains consistent across the UK.

44,009 householdsCensus 2022
One-person households32.7% · 14,382 households
Families with dependent children26.4% · 11,640 households
Other single-family households37.7% · 16,599 households
Other household types3.2% · 1,388 households

Household-composition figures come from the Commons Library constituency dataset. The source uses census data and Project Open Gov displays its broad household groups rather than attempting to harmonise the detailed categories itself. View household-composition source ↗

Disability and day-to-day activities

The source records whether day-to-day activities are limited and uses separate person-level tables for England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

98,521 people in the source baseCensus 2022Source comparison: Scotland
Day-to-day activities limited a lot7.6% · 7,450 people
Day-to-day activities limited a little11.5% · 11,365 people
Non-disabled80.9% · 79,706 people

Comparison note: the workbook uses different source terminology across the UK: England & Wales uses “Disabled under the Equality Act”, while Scotland and Northern Ireland use “Disabled” / “Non-disabled”. Project Open Gov therefore preserves the source categories and does not present them as one single like-for-like UK legal definition.

Disability figures come from the Commons Library constituency workbook. This profile uses the person-level tables only; the workbook also contains separate household-level disability tables which are not used here. View disability source ↗

Dancers Connected

Errol White Company

£72,674

Creative Scotland · Arts

About this award

This project supports White & Givan’s next stage of development by strengthening the talent pipeline on which our artistic and organisational sustainability depends. Our work relies on access to exceptional freelance contemporary dancers based in Scotland, many of whom are unable to sustain performing careers due to the need to prioritise teaching to earn a living and the lack of ongoing company-style training and support. This investment will enable us to take Dancers Connected — our place-based training model that mirrors key elements of full-time company infrastructure for freelance dancers — to pilot stage. In partnership with Citymoves, funding will activate our eight place-based principles, establishing a regionally grounded model of supported self-led training that integrates studio practice, rehearsal direction, health and wellbeing support and reflective development, with professional performance experience embedded within the programme.
