East Kilbride and Strathaven lies within South Lanarkshire and combines the large new town of East Kilbride with Strathaven and surrounding rural communities. East Kilbride is by far the largest urban centre, with a planned post-war layout of residential neighbourhoods, shopping areas and industrial estates. South and west of the town, the constituency becomes much more rural, with Strathaven providing a smaller historic market-town centre amid farmland and moorland. The seat therefore contains a sharp contrast between one of Scotland’s largest new towns and a broad countryside hinterland. Major roads link the area with Glasgow, Hamilton and the wider central belt.
