Coatbridge and Bellshill lies within North Lanarkshire and is centred on the two neighbouring towns in its name. It also includes surrounding communities such as Viewpark, Tannochside, Mossend and parts of the urban corridor between Glasgow and Motherwell. The constituency is predominantly urban and suburban, with former industrial towns and large residential neighbourhoods forming much of the landscape. Coatbridge is the largest centre, while Bellshill provides another important town and transport focus farther south. Railways and motorways cross the seat, reflecting its position in the central Scotland conurbation. Pockets of open land remain between some communities, but the overall character is strongly built up.
