Argyll, Bute and South Lochaber is one of the geographically largest constituencies in the UK. It covers most of Argyll and Bute, including communities around Oban, Dunoon, Helensburgh, Campbeltown, Lochgilphead and Rothesay, as well as islands such as Bute, Islay, Jura and Mull. The constituency then extends north into South Lochaber, taking in areas around Ardnamurchan, Kinlochleven, Ballachulish and Glencoe. Sea lochs, islands, peninsulas and mountain ranges make travel within the seat unusually dispersed, with many communities separated by long road journeys or ferry routes. There is no single dominant urban centre; instead, the constituency is made up of numerous small towns, villages and island communities spread across a very large area.

About this award
International exchange connecting two places shaped by energy: Aberdeen, self-proclaimed European energy capital, and Yubari, Japan’s former coal-mining centre. Building on a relation formed in 2018 British Council/Creative Scotland’s Curators’ Visit, this project realises a long-held plan to bring Scottish artists to Yubari. To think about growing together, Aberdeen artists lead a tactile collective art-making at Yubari Primary School and at Newton Dee Camphill Community in Aberdeen. Activities culminate in a Riso-printed publication, featuring playful, practical recipes for collective actions, from composting to creating inclusive language-free spaces. Using art as a vehicle, the project builds resilience, creativity and confidence while challenging stereotypes of cities with large energy industries and imagining greener, fairer futures together. It also creates the first Japan opportunity for early-career Scottish artists and international learning for Yubari/Aberdeen communities.

The Ebb and Flow is the culmination of a seven-year collaborative dialogue between two inter-generational creative practitioners: composer Kerrie J Robinson and visual artist Jane Rushton. Developed across the shifting landscapes of the Covid-19 pandemic, this touring multi-disciplinary installation examines the coastal environment of Mallaig Bheag. By layering field recordings, piano composition, detailed visual art, and film, the work serves as a profound meditation on environmental connection, mental health, grief, and loss. We aim to take this high-quality contemporary work into the heart of rural Highlands communities, ensuring cultural access that is rooted in their own local geography.
