Arbroath and Broughty Ferry follows the Angus and Dundee coast. It includes Arbroath and its surrounding communities, Carnoustie and Monifieth, then continues into the eastern side of Dundee through Broughty Ferry, the North East ward and part of the East End. Much of the constituency is therefore closely tied to the coast and the transport corridor between Arbroath and Dundee. Arbroath is the largest town in the Angus part of the seat, while Broughty Ferry forms an established suburban centre on the edge of Dundee. Away from those built-up areas, the constituency also includes smaller communities and agricultural land inland from the coast, giving it a mixture of urban, suburban and rural character.

If Stone Could Speak is a new play by Matthew Knights exploring the life of the gifted artist and sculptor Adam Christie, who was transported from his homeland of Shetland to Montrose Sunnyside Royal Psychiatric Hospital in 1901, after struggling with severe mental health issues. He remained at the hospital until his death in 1950 where he produced a number of various artworks in particular carved stone figures which he placed in the hospital grounds and gifted to local residents. This application is for writing time in 2026 for the playwright to develop a production ready draft including a week-long research trip to Shetland in September 2026 to visit sites associated with Adam’s life, and undertake archival research. A director and actors will be engaged to present a public rehearsed reading of work in progress at Montrose Museum in November 2026 with a further reading to be held in Spring 2027. Two themed creative writing workshops will be run in Montrose encouraging local people to engage with the topic and the company.
