Airdrie and Shotts lies within North Lanarkshire and is centred on the two towns named in the constituency, with a chain of communities between and around them. It includes much of Airdrie together with places such as Plains, Caldercruix, Greengairs, Longriggend, Chapelhall and Shotts. The M8 corridor and the railway network cross the area, while the eastern side becomes more open and lower-density around Shotts and the surrounding settlements. North Lanarkshire treats Airdrie and Shotts as distinct community areas, and the constituency brings those together in one seat. Its character is therefore mixed: sizeable urban neighbourhoods around Airdrie, smaller towns and villages, and stretches of former industrial and rural land between them.
