Newry and Armagh covers a broad part of southern Northern Ireland and is centred on the cities of Newry and Armagh. Newry is an important commercial and transport centre close to the Irish border, while Armagh has a distinct historic and ecclesiastical role farther north. Between and around them are market towns, villages and extensive agricultural countryside. The constituency includes upland areas, river valleys and border communities, with settlement becoming widely dispersed outside the two main cities. Major roads connect the area with Belfast, Dublin and other parts of Northern Ireland. The seat therefore combines two important urban centres with a substantial rural hinterland.
