Thirsk and Malton covers a large part of North Yorkshire and is centred on the market towns of Thirsk and Malton. It also includes numerous villages and rural communities spread across the Vale of Mowbray, the Howardian Hills and areas approaching the North York Moors. Both principal towns provide local services for extensive rural hinterlands, while settlement elsewhere is generally dispersed. Major road and rail routes connect the area with York, Teesside and the wider county. Overall, the constituency has a strongly rural and market-town character rather than one dominant urban centre.
