Much of the town was developed as a post-war new town, with residential neighbourhoods arranged around a central commercial area, employment zones and extensive green spaces. Major road and rail links provide strong connections with London, Cambridge and neighbouring towns. The constituency is predominantly urban and suburban, though parks and green corridors are an important part of its planned layout. Overall, the seat is focused on one large and clearly defined town rather than a broad collection of villages or rural communities.
