Spelthorne lies in north-west Surrey immediately outside Greater London and is centred on towns such as Staines-upon-Thames, Sunbury and Ashford. The constituency is predominantly suburban and commuter-oriented, with extensive residential development and strong road and rail links. The River Thames, reservoirs and stretches of open land are important physical features and create significant breaks within the built-up area. Heathrow Airport lies close to the northern edge and strongly influences transport and employment patterns. Overall, the seat combines closely connected suburban towns with riverside landscapes and pockets of green-belt land.
