Runcorn and Helsby covers communities on the south side of the Mersey and Weaver estuaries in Cheshire. Runcorn is the largest urban centre, with extensive post-war development, industrial areas and major transport infrastructure around the Mersey crossings. Helsby is a smaller town to the south-east, set near wooded hills and more open countryside. Between and around them are villages, farmland and industrial or transport corridors. The constituency therefore combines a substantial new-town and industrial landscape with smaller Cheshire communities and a more rural eastern fringe. Road and rail routes provide strong links toward Liverpool, Chester, Warrington and Manchester.
