Pontefract, Castleford and Knottingley covers a group of closely linked towns in the eastern part of the Wakefield district. Pontefract is a historic market town, while Castleford and Knottingley have strong industrial and former mining connections. The constituency is predominantly urban and semi-urban, with residential areas, former industrial land and transport corridors separating the principal centres. The River Aire and motorway network are important physical and transport features. Open land remains between some settlements, but the towns form part of a closely connected West Yorkshire landscape. Overall, the seat combines several distinct local centres rather than one dominant city.
