Pendle and Clitheroe stretches across eastern Lancashire and combines former industrial towns with the Ribble Valley and surrounding countryside. Clitheroe is an important market-town centre, while communities around Pendle have a stronger former textile and industrial character. Between the larger settlements are villages, farmland, wooded valleys and upland areas associated with Pendle Hill and the Pennines. Major roads connect the seat with Burnley, Blackburn and the wider Ribble Valley. The constituency therefore contains a marked contrast between compact towns and extensive rural landscapes, with no single urban centre dominating the whole area.
