Ossett is the largest urban centre, while Denby Dale and surrounding communities have a more semi-rural and village character. The constituency includes former industrial towns, suburban neighbourhoods, villages and open countryside separated by hills and valleys. Major motorway and road links connect the area with Leeds, Wakefield, Huddersfield and Barnsley. Settlement is distributed among several distinct local centres rather than concentrated in one city. Overall, the seat combines urban and former industrial communities with increasingly rural landscapes toward its western and southern edges.
