Orpington covers the south-eastern edge of Greater London within the London Borough of Bromley. It is centred on Orpington and surrounding suburban communities, with residential development extending toward the Kent boundary. The constituency has a noticeably lower-density character than inner London, and substantial green-belt land, woodland and open countryside appear around its outer edges. Orpington is the main commercial and transport centre, with strong rail links toward central London and Kent. Smaller local centres serve neighbouring communities. Overall, the seat forms a transition between continuous London suburbia and the rural landscapes immediately beyond the metropolitan boundary.
