Oldham East and Saddleworth combines eastern Oldham with communities stretching into the Pennine foothills. The Oldham section is predominantly urban and suburban, while Saddleworth contains a series of villages and smaller settlements separated by hills, valleys and open moorland. This creates a marked contrast between the built-up Greater Manchester conurbation and the more rural landscapes to the east. Major roads link the constituency with Oldham, Manchester and West Yorkshire, while local routes follow the valleys through the Pennines. The seat therefore has a mixed urban and upland character, bringing together town neighbourhoods with distinct valley communities.
