Maidstone and Malling combines western parts of Maidstone with communities stretching into the Malling area of Kent. Maidstone is the largest urban and administrative centre, while towns and villages farther west have a more suburban or rural character. The River Medway is an important geographical feature, and major road and rail routes connect the constituency with London, the Medway towns and wider Kent. Outside the main built-up areas, orchards, farmland and wooded countryside are common. The seat therefore combines part of a major county town with smaller commuter settlements and rural communities across the Medway valley rather than being centred on one continuous urban area.
