Jarrow and Gateshead East crosses the boundary between South Tyneside and Gateshead. It is centred on Jarrow and nearby communities along the south bank of the River Tyne, then extends west into eastern Gateshead neighbourhoods. The constituency is predominantly urban and suburban, with a landscape shaped by former shipbuilding, heavy industry and later residential development. Jarrow provides a distinct town centre, while other communities form part of the continuous Tyneside conurbation. Metro, road and rail routes connect the seat with Newcastle, South Shields and Sunderland. The Tyne and its industrial waterfront remain important physical features along the northern edge.
