Havant constituency covers the south-east Hampshire town of Havant and surrounding communities including Emsworth, Bedhampton, Purbrook and Hayling Island. Havant is the principal town and transport centre, while Emsworth provides a smaller historic harbour settlement near the West Sussex border. Hayling Island gives the constituency a strong coastal character, separated from the mainland by tidal channels and linked by a single main road. Residential and suburban development dominates much of the mainland area, although parks, shoreline and open spaces remain significant. The seat lies between Portsmouth and Chichester and is closely connected to the wider South Hampshire urban corridor while retaining several distinct local centres.

This project will be delivered by Hayling Island Sailing Club from its base at Sandy Point, Hayling Island. The project centres on the purchase of a coastal rowing boat and associated equipment to introduce a new rowing offer alongside the club's existing sailing activity. Sessions will be delivered by trained members and volunteers, with support from a British Rowing-affiliated Coastal Rowing Academy, targeting three groups: young people through the Community Youth Sailing Scheme, female members, and members aged 50+. Sport England funding is requested for a single coastal rowing setup.

Young people describe Leigh Park being a place where there is 'nothing to do'. Where 'everything is crap', where 'other people look down their nose at them'. We want to challenge these preconceptions and create an inclusive project where young volunteers, not in education, employment or training (NEET), can undertake a programme of activity to learn and understand their area better by learning about its heritage, engaging with older generations and creating materials for an exhibition that celebrates and recognises the 60th anniversary of the shopping precinct, Greywell, in the centre of Leigh Park as well as the 80th anniversary of the building of Leigh Park housing estate - at one time the largest housing estate in Europe. We will bring project volunteers, residents, businesses and organisations with us on a journey to rebuild a sense of civic pride, looking at where they live in a new, more positive way.
