Hartlepool constituency is centred on the County Durham coastal town and contains almost all of its main urban area together with some surrounding communities. The town developed around the harbour and docks and retains a strong maritime and industrial landscape along the North Sea. Hartlepool town centre provides the principal commercial and transport focus, while residential neighbourhoods extend inland and along the coast. The Headland and marina areas give different parts of the waterfront distinct characters. Toward the western and northern edges, development meets open countryside and smaller settlements. The constituency is therefore predominantly urban and strongly focused on one coastal town rather than a broad rural district.
