Hammersmith and Chiswick stretches across west London along the north bank of the River Thames. It is centred on Hammersmith and Chiswick and includes neighbouring residential and commercial districts between them. Hammersmith is a major transport and business centre, while Chiswick has a more suburban character with its own high street and riverside neighbourhoods. The Thames defines much of the southern edge and provides parks, towpaths and open views within an otherwise heavily built-up constituency. Major road, Underground and rail routes cross the seat, including important east–west connections through west London. Overall, it combines dense inner-west London development with more residential riverside and suburban areas.
