Halifax constituency is centred on the West Yorkshire town of Halifax and includes much of its surrounding urban area. The town sits in the Calder Valley and is characterised by steep hills, dense residential neighbourhoods and a strong legacy of textile and industrial development. Halifax town centre provides the main commercial and transport focus, while surrounding communities extend up the valley sides and into more suburban districts. The River Calder, railways and major roads follow the lower ground through the area. Toward the outer edge, development becomes less continuous and meets Pennine countryside. The seat is therefore predominantly urban but strongly shaped by its hilly valley setting.
