Local context

About this constituency

Hackney South and Shoreditch covers the southern part of Hackney and reaches from Shoreditch and Hoxton east and north through central Hackney neighbourhoods. It is one of London’s most densely urban constituencies, combining inner-city residential streets, major commercial areas, former industrial districts and extensive redevelopment. Shoreditch and Hoxton sit close to the City of London and have a particularly dense mixed-use character, while areas farther north and east are more residential. The Regent’s Canal and local parks provide important open corridors within the seat. Strong rail, Overground and bus links connect the constituency across London. Overall, it is a compact inner-city seat with several closely connected neighbourhood centres.

Description last reviewed 9 September 2026.

Household composition

A broad view of household types in this constituency. Project Open Gov uses the four broad groups supplied by the Commons Library so the presentation remains consistent across the UK.

Disability and day-to-day activities

The source records whether day-to-day activities are limited and uses separate person-level tables for England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

112,557 people in the source baseCensus 2021Source comparison: England & Wales
Day-to-day activities limited a lot6.8% · 7,676 people
Day-to-day activities limited a little8.1% · 9,164 people
Not disabled under the Equality Act85.0% · 95,717 people

Comparison note: the workbook uses different source terminology across the UK: England & Wales uses “Disabled under the Equality Act”, while Scotland and Northern Ireland use “Disabled” / “Non-disabled”. Project Open Gov therefore preserves the source categories and does not present them as one single like-for-like UK legal definition.

Disability figures come from the Commons Library constituency workbook. This profile uses the person-level tables only; the workbook also contains separate household-level disability tables which are not used here. View disability source ↗
