Gravesham is centred on Gravesend in north Kent and extends south and east into surrounding villages and countryside. Gravesend is the largest urban and commercial centre, positioned on the south bank of the River Thames opposite Essex. The constituency also includes suburban communities and rural settlements across the North Downs and the edge of the Kent countryside. The Thames strongly shapes its northern edge, while major road and rail routes connect Gravesend with London, the Medway towns and the Channel corridor. Outside the main urban area, settlement becomes lower-density and more dispersed. The seat therefore combines a substantial riverside town with commuter villages, farmland and wooded downland.
