Godalming and Ash covers a large part of south-west Surrey and crosses the Guildford and Waverley local-authority areas. It includes Godalming, Ash, Cranleigh and numerous villages such as Shalford, Bramley, Milford and Chiddingfold. Godalming is the largest traditional town, while Ash lies closer to the Hampshire border and the Aldershot urban area. Much of the constituency is rural, with woodland, farmland and villages across the Surrey Hills and surrounding countryside. Cranleigh provides another important local centre in the east. The seat therefore combines commuter towns, suburban communities and a substantial rural hinterland rather than forming one continuous built-up area.
