Local context
Glastonbury and Somerton covers a broad area of central Somerset centred on the towns of Glastonbury and Somerton. It also includes Street and numerous villages spread across the Somerset Levels and surrounding higher ground. Glastonbury and Street form the largest concentration of population, while Somerton provides a separate historic market-town centre farther south. Outside the towns, much of the constituency is rural, with farmland, wetlands, drainage channels and low-lying landscapes characteristic of the Levels. Higher ground around the Polden Hills and other ridges breaks up the flat countryside. The seat therefore combines several small towns with a large and distinctive rural hinterland rather than one continuous urban area.
