Gedling lies immediately north-east of Nottingham and is centred on the suburban communities of Arnold, Carlton and Gedling. Much of the constituency forms part of the continuous Nottingham urban area, with established residential neighbourhoods, local town centres and former industrial land. Arnold is one of the largest centres, while Carlton and Gedling connect the seat closely to Nottingham itself. Toward the northern and eastern edges, development gives way to villages, farmland and more open countryside. The constituency therefore has a mixed suburban and semi-rural character, combining densely settled communities near Nottingham with lower-density areas farther from the city. Road and bus links tie most of the seat strongly to the wider conurbation.
