Gateshead Central and Whickham covers the central and western parts of the Gateshead borough. It includes Gateshead town centre and neighbourhoods close to the River Tyne, then extends west through Dunston and toward Whickham and surrounding suburban communities. The eastern part is densely urban and closely connected to Newcastle across the Tyne, while the western side becomes more suburban and includes larger areas of open land. Gateshead provides the main civic and transport focus, with Whickham retaining a distinct local centre farther west. Major road and rail corridors cross the constituency, which forms a transition from the inner Tyneside conurbation to lower-density neighbourhoods on its western edge.
